DVD INFO
What are REGION codes?
Not All DVDs play in all DVD players! The DVD world is divided into six major geographical regions, with two additional regions reserved for specialized use.
To keep it simple, this means that DVD players and DVDs are labeled for operation within a specific geographical region in the world.
For example, the U.S. is in region 1. This means that all DVD players sold in the U.S. are made to region 1 specifications. As a result, region 1 players can only play region 1 discs. The DVDs themselves are encoded for a specific region. On the back of most DVD packages, you will a find a region number (1 thru 6 or 0).
Which REGION code is for my country?
The geographical regions are as follows:
REGION 1 -- USA, Canada
REGION 2 -- Japan, Europe, South Africa, Middle East, Greenland
REGION 3 -- S.Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Parts of South East Asia
REGION 4 -- Australia, New Zealand, Latin America (including Mexico)
REGION 5 -- Eastern Europe, Russia, India, Africa
REGION 6 -- China
REGION 7 -- Reserved for Unspecified Special Use
REGION 8 -- Resevered for Cruise Ships, Airlines, etc...
REGION 0 or REGION ALL -- Discs are uncoded and can be played Worldwide, however, PAL discs must be played in a PAL-compatible unit and NTSC discs can be played in an NTSC- and most PAL-compatible unit.
Most modern DVD players are able to play and support all Regions.
Why do DVDs have a REGION code?
According to what the public is being told, such coding is a tool to protect copyright and film distribution rights (in other words, movie studio profits).
Movies are released in theaters in different parts of the world at different times throughout the year. That Summer blockbuster in the U.S. may end up being the Christmas blockbuster overseas. If that occurs, the DVD version of the movie may be out in the U.S. while it is still showing in theaters overseas.
In order to preserve the financial integrity of the theatrical distribution of a particular film, it is not possible (under normal conditions) to have a friend in the U.S. send a DVD copy of the film to the country where it is in theatrical release and be able to play the DVD on a player there.
What is PAL, NTSC or SECAM?
There are three main standards in use around the world: PAL, NTSC and SECAM
Each one is incompatible with the other. For example, a recording made in the France could not be played on an American VCR or DVD player.
The system used in America & Canada is called "NTSC" (also compatible with most PAL DVD players and TVs). Western Europe and Australia use a system called "PAL", and Eastern Europe and France use "SECAM". Without standards conversion, it is impossible to view a video program that is recorded in a foreign country without first converting it. Most modern players support all systems.
What is DOLBY 5.1?
Dolby Digital 5.1 is a new format that has become more popular with the coming of DVD. This audio format offers any number of dedicated channels up to five main channels and one low frequency effect channel. Dolby Digital is the most popular current decoding method for DVDs and offers the following improvements on movie soundtracks:
- Improved clarity of center channel dialog
- Greater separation of music from dialog
- Discreet surround channel use. Missles flying from rear right to rear left.
- Greater overall frequency range for all six channels.
- Greater accuracy in all six channels.
- More accurately representing the films original score.
In most ways, all DVD players are Dolby Digital compatible. Most DVDs are compatible with DVD players without a Dolby Digital encoder.
What is DTS?
DTS (Digital Theatre Sound) is a competitor of Dolby Digital 5.1. It also offers a five channel plus low frequency effect channel, but it is not compatible with the Dolby Digital soundtrack. The marketing babble that comes out of DTS says that it uses a lower form of compression which gives you a better overall sound for your movies. We personally have not found this to be the case. Listening to both DTS and Dolby Digital versions of the film gave us little sense that one was better than the other. Dolby Digital or DTS can both sound excellent or shoddy depending on the quality of the soundtrack. Regardless, we certainly recommend getting DTS compatible equipment for both your DVD player and your receiver since the cost is minimal. Many DVDs now come with both Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtracks and DTS 5.1 soundtracks, letting you pick the version to listen to. One interesting side note, Dolby Digital includes a signal compression feature for late night viewing that DTS does not. This allows you to hear dialog and quiet scenes at their normal volume while louder scenes are suppressed.
In most ways, all DVD players are DTS compatible. Most DVDs are compatible with DVD players without a DTS encoder.
